Job Overview

Job title: Security Officers – Registration Of Interest Ref. 3162

Job description: 1

MI5 keeps the country safe from serious threats like terrorism and attempts by states to harm the UK, its people and way of life. And it’s equally important that we safeguard the places we work.

As an MI5 Security Officer, you’ll protect our assets, people and places, and help make our intricate security operation a success. As part of an inclusive, friendly team of motivated professionals, you’ll provide a reassuring presence for staff and visitors and carry out a range of security duties.

Roles will be either a 12-hour rotating or day shift (London only) pattern.

Our 12 hour rotating shift workers typically work the following pattern comprising day and night shifts: 2 day shifts (covering 0600-1830, including an hour’s unpaid meal break), 2 night shifts (covering 1800-0630 including an hour’s unpaid meal break) and 4 days off.

Our day shift workers typically work Monday to Friday. Each week you will work a different shift pattern of either 06:00-15:00, 08:00-17:00 or 11:00-20:00.

The above times are provided as a guide and exact shift patterns may vary. Please note there are currently 12 hour rotating shifts and day shifts available in London. In Reading, Oxfordshire and Swindon there only 12 hour rotating shift patterns available.

You’ll also be required to have, and maintain, a reasonable level of personal fitness. As part of the recruitment process, you’ll need to complete a Fitness for Role assessment which currently includes:

  • Eyesight test
  • Hearing Test
  • Step Test
  • Advisory only BMI test

If successful, you’ll need to maintain your fitness throughout the duration of the placement, as periodic medicals form part of the deployment of a Security Officer.

The application window for our Security Officer role will open at 3pm, on Friday 1st March. In the meantime, we encourage:

  • All those from an ethnic minority background
  • Women from any ethnic background

To register their interest in this forthcoming opportunity.

As part of the registration of interest, you will be invited to several online events prior to the campaign opening. There will be Insight Events where you can find out more about the role, hear from real staff and have the chance to ask us all questions. We are also offering a Skills Event which will provide general tips about completing a job application, preparing for interview etc. These events will run on:

Insight Events – Wednesday 28th February (12.30pm and 6pm)

Skills Event – Friday 1st March (1pm)

The events will last for approximately 1 hour.

Please note that a registration of interest does not constitute a job application, nor will such registration have any bearing upon the recruitment process itself. Anyone who registers their interest and who choose subsequently to apply for the Security Officer role will need to complete an application form once the window for applications has opened.

We are confining registrations of interest to these groups only, due to their current under-representation in our workforce. Once the application window has opened, we welcome applications from all candidates, regardless of their ethnic background, gender, disability and/or any other characteristic(s). Please check our nationality eligibility criteria requirements .

All applications will be assessed solely on merit.
